Apples

October is the peak of the British apple season, with a huge range of different varieties of apple all at their very best. Although a few supermarkets make an effort to source a few local varieties, as with so many things the majority of apples on the shelves are imported and not nearly as good as some of the varieties on your own doorstep or in your own garden!
It's definitely worth seeking out a few of your locally grown apple varieties in October, as you will find a range of flavours that simply isn't available in the more common Golden Delicious / Granny Smith offerings in the supermarkets. Native apples such as Cox' Orange Pippin, Discovery and Russet can contain up to five times the amount of vitamin C found in the imported and more common apples on sale - with more flavour and more nutritional value, why not seek out something a bit different or go and pick your own?!
Tips
- Apples can be sotred for three or four months if stored properly - try wrapping lightly in newspaper and keeping in a cool dark spot where they won't freeze or bruise
- Try making an apple and chilli chutney with chillis from BuyGB - great with cheese and cold meats!
- Core, stuff with raisins, cover with honey and bake...
- Surely apple and cinnamon crumble needs no introduction?
