Lamb (New Season)

As with so many products these days lamb is available all year round with imports from New Zealand and Australia taking up the strain when the British season is at it's lowest, however it is well worth looking out good British lamb when it is in season.

Traditionally associated with spring (and often Easter) when the first of the new season lamb becomes available, many people don't realise that where your lamb has come from will make a difference to when it is at its best!

The new-season lamb in the shops in June and July will usually be coming from Wales and the South-west, where the spring and summer take hold earlier - affecting not only the lambing season but also the grass on which they graze. As the year goes on, the new-season gets progressively more northern, with lamb from Cumbria becoming ready in September.

Tips

  • As summer heads towards Autumn, look for lamb from the north of England - earlier in the year look for Lamb from the Southwest of England
  • Try cooking in a pan of cider, chopped carrots and stock, adding a few green beans at the end and serving with mashed potato for a quick and easy tasty supper.
