Strawberries

The true strawberry season lasts about 6 weeks in the UK - from mid June to the beginning of August - and this really is the best time to track them down.

Many imported or even supposedly fresh strawberries in the supermarkets are picked and shipped before they are fully ripe as they have a limited shelf life and damage easily when ripe. The result is that, deprived of the final stages of ripening in the sun, they are never as sweet or tasty as those that are picked ripe and eaten fresh.

Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and folic acid, and if you have become used to the more available imported or shop-bought you need to go out and either pick your own from one of the many fruit farms around the country, or pick some up from your local farmers market or farm shop - make sure they haven't traveled far though!

Tips

  • Eat your fresh strawberries as quickly as possible! They don't travel or keep very well
  • If serving as a dessert (with sugar and cream or ice cream!) serve at room temperature - straight from the fridge they will lose their flavour
  • Pick your own at one of the many fruit farms around the country!
  • For a treat, gently hea some balsamic vinegar, add an equal volume of sugar and stir to dissolve. Once cool, pour a little over some strawbeeries at room temperature and serve with cream!
